A Blue(s) Duck Egg "Trompe-l'œil"

Trompe-l’œil, French for “deceive the eye”, is the art of creating convincing illusions of three-dimensional objects. In this workshop, you’ll paint a beautifully speckled blue duck egg at its true scale, discovering how realism can transform a simple subject into something unexpectedly captivating.

Designed to be approachable and beginner-friendly, this session introduces the foundations of Trompe-l’œil painting through one charming, quirky object. Learn how light, shadow, and careful observation work together to create the illusion of depth and form.

The Workshop Flow

Discover how to anchor an object convincingly onto the canvas, making it appear almost touchable. Explore colour mixing techniques, subtle value shifts, and delicate speckling details that bring the duck egg to life.

You’ll also learn practical brush techniques and simple approaches to creating realistic transitions, helping you achieve a striking three-dimensional effect with confidence.

Drying Time

As this workshop uses oil paints, your artwork will require time to fully cure. You may choose to leave your painting safely at our studio for approximately one week before collection, or take it home with you on the day of the workshop.

All painting materials and tools: Canvas (20cm x 20cm), artist-grade oil paints, acrylics, brushes, apron, and everything you need to complete your artwork.
